The merger between Gimbels and Schuster’s, two Milwaukee department stores, was completed on April 9th, 1962. Gimbels was one of the largest department store corporations in the world at the time, and Schuster’s was one of its main competitor in the Milwaukee area. For some time the merged branches operated as Gimbels Schuster’s. In 1973, Gimbels itself was bought out by British American Tobacco, which shut down the iconic department store in 1986
